A new STEM centre is completed three weeks early.

On time and on budget, achieving a level of detail and care that saw this facility fully operational on opening day.

Classic Contractors were given the complex task of refurbishing an existing building to create a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) Centre at Kennedy Baptist College in Murdoch. The works comprised not only building the new two-storey wing and single-storey extension, but also completing the fit out of the science labs and bespoke facilities.

One of the major challenges on this project was that the college was fully operational during the works and, just like the client asked, no lessons or exams were disrupted.

We hit a problem, we give the client a solution,” said Project Manager, Mark Stewart.

We also kept the traffic areas flowing smoothly during drop-off and pick-up times for the 1400 students. It was quite a logistical task to make sure our vehicles were all moved out of the way on time and the area was kept safe, but we met it with our usual professionalism and good humour.

Along with the extra co-ordination to achieve uninterrupted business for the school, due to the complexity of the project the team was also required to manage over 50 different trades.

The service-heavy scope required mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components as well as exposed ceilings, all to be installed in a tight timeframe that required the specific expertise Classic were able to bring to this project.

“I was particularly pleased with the finish and that we were on time and on budget. There was a fair bit of financial and time planning involved to accomplish that,” Mark said.

It’s not something any construction company can do – some just do factories, some just sheds - but we excel at these kinds of service-heavy projects like schools, aged care and health where there are multiple trades involved.”

The craftsmanship required was across a large range of required skills. We are proud of achieving a level of detail and care that saw the facility fully operational when it opened. The installation included demolition of existing internals, installing partitions, ceilings, benches, metal shelving, wet areas, lockable shelving, dust extraction, safety fittings, and bespoke equipment stands and electrics, along with flooring and paving.

Not only was the project completed ahead of schedule, our outstanding safety plan for our team, the client and students was adhered to, resulting in zero accidents or injury. Where it was required, we also worked out of hours to make certain there would be no disruption to the school or any possible injuries due to the students being present near the site.

The school was especially happy with the finish and that it was done on time, weeks early in fact. That doesn’t happen very often.”

Where possible, we award work to members of our local supply chain. This project was no exception with a large proportion carried out by our key suppliers based in the southern suburbs.
